I have four daughters. We all have natural afro hair and occasionally braided. We also have voluminous hair. This is a problem for my girls during swimming season at their respective schools as they struggled to tuck in the hair into a standard size swimming cap. Schools in South Africa do not allow children inside a pool without a cap, my girls used to be very frustrated as they would try to stretch the swimming cap and that would only cover half their hair and could not keep their hair dry. After swimming lessons when they get home, I would sit for hours trying to blow-dry their hair.
The standard size caps are very harsh to natural hair because they are very tight and pull one’s hair resulting in breakages when pulling off the cap. There was a time my girls decided not to be braiding their hair during Summer because that is the time that most schools without heated pools have swimming lessons.
When I got tired of all the hassles of blow drying their hair after school, I googled and tried to get stores selling big swimming caps. With limited success I decided that the best option is to find a permanent solution for all African women with voluminous hair.
The result is SwimFro®.
